What Is a Sarouk Rug?

Sarouk rugs are woven in the village of Sarouk and the city of Arak, located in the Markazi Province of Iran. They gained fame in the 1800s for their colors and the incomparable quality of the wool used. The handspun yarn used to craft these timeless rugs has been described as “luminous”.

Some of the finest Sarouk rugs, made in what eventually came to be called the Mahajiran style, use only the softest lamb’s wool. They also feature incredibly intricate patterns and designs, as well as a deep, rich pile.

Why Red?

If you’re familiar with American Sarouk rugs, chances are good you immediately picture a red rug. That’s because from the 1910s to the 1950s, Americans imported massive quantities of these classic rugs, but because the range of normal colors wasn’t appealing (salmon, rose, terra cotta, and burnt sienna being the most common) they were dyed red on reaching the US.

The truth is that you can find a Sarouk Persian rug in almost any color today, including some of the rarest, which are colored a deep, vibrant blue.

What Is an Antique Sarouk Rug Made From?

Like other fine rugs from Persia, Sarouks are made from 100% natural materials. This includes natural yarn, organic dyes (vegetable dyes), and an organic base/foundation, which is usually made from cotton but may be made from silk in some cases.

Is a Sarouk Easy to Care For?
